Pilots are responsible for ensuring the safe arrival of the passengers entrusted in their care. Part of this responsibility includes the proper functioning of their aircraft and navigating it at a velocity approaching the speed of sound several kilometers above the Earth.
The vast majority of pilots have 3000 to 4000 hours of flying experience before becoming an Embraer First Officer (the starting position at Air Canada for a pilot) and many take a pay cut when they start with the company.
Pilots who fly within North America on the Embraer and Airbus narrow-bodied aircraft maintain rigorous flying schedules upwards of 85 hours per month and are away from home frequently. They are paid for preparation and flying time, but receive only stipends and expenses while away from home.
Wide-bodied aircraft pilots also fly upwards of 85 hours per month, they are away from home for long periods of time every month. This absence can also have a detrimental impact on the family and personal lives of pilots.
